The brief for this project was to create a portrait for an editorial magazine of a famous person. We were tasked with concentrating on the likeness of the person while adding our own stylistic spin and incorporating elements that tell the viewer something they might’ve not known about the person.
I chose to illustrate the lead singer of one of my favorite bands, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast. This was a really fun project for me since it was squarely in my comfort zone — digitally painted portraits.
I thought a lot about how to approach this illustration since I had also recently read her book, Crying In H Mart, which is a memoir that explores her relationship with her mother and experiences growing up as Korean American and reconnecting with her cultural roots after her mother’s passing. It was important to me that I somehow featured a part of that reconnection within my illustration without it being too in your face.

Nous devions nous concentrer sur la ressemblance de la personne tout en ajoutant notre propre touche stylistique et en incorporant des éléments qui permettent au spectateur d’apprendre quelque chose qu’il ne savait peut-être pas sur la personne.
J’ai choisi d’illustrer la chanteuse d’un de mes groupes préférés, Michelle Zauner de Japanese Breakfast. C’était un projet très plaisant pour moi, car il se situait carrément dans ma zone de confort - les portraits peints de manière digitale.
J’ai beaucoup réfléchi à la manière de traiter cette illustration car j’ai également lu récemment son livre, Crying In H Mart, qui est un mémoire qui explore sa relation avec sa mère et son expérience en grandissant en tant qu’Américaine d’origine coréenne, et en renouant avec ses racines culturelles après le décès de sa mère. Il était important pour moi de présenter une partie de cette reconnexion dans mon illustration sans que cela ne soit trop évident.
