For this project, the briefing was to choose and redesign the cover of a young adult novel to produce a compelling design that attracts attention through strong contrast, impactful composition, and an attractive color palette.
After some brainstorming, I narrowed down my book of choice to A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess.
I thought that with the direction that I was taking my portfolio, along with my craving to illustrate a more unsettling genre of imagery, this book would fit perfectly.
Ce projet consistait à choisir et à redessiner la couverture d’un roman pour jeunes adultes afin de produire un design convaincant qui attire l’attention par un contraste fort, une composition percutante et une palette de couleurs attrayante.
Après un remue-méninge, j’ai arrêté mon choix sur A Clockwork Orange d’Anthony Burgess. J’ai pensé que, compte tenu de la direction que je donnais à mon portfolio et de mon désir d’illustrer un genre d’imagerie plus troublant, ce livre convenait parfaitement.

Creating a new cover for this book came with two challenges: representing the themes or events of a book I’d never read before, and avoiding falling back on the crutch of the iconic cog eye illustration from the book’s 1972 edition.
After reading a summary of the story, I was intrigued by one scene in particular where the main character is trapped inside a room where classical music is being blasted, resulting in the torture-induced trauma response of him going crazy and jumping out of the window to get away from the music.
With my spark of inspiration in hand, I aimed to create an illustration depicting not specifically the events of the scene, but rather the intensity of desperation and agony felt by the main character at such a climactic point in the story.
La création d'une nouvelle couverture pour ce livre comportait deux défis : représenter les thèmes ou les événements d'un livre que je n'avais jamais lu auparavant, et éviter de retomber sur la béquille de l'illustration iconique de l'œil engrené de l'édition 1972 du livre.
Après avoir lu un résumé de l'histoire, j'ai été intrigué par une scène en particulier où le personnage principal est piégé dans une pièce où l'on diffuse de la musique classique, ce qui provoque chez lui une réaction traumatique induite par la torture : il devient fou et saute par la fenêtre pour s'éloigner de la musique.
Ayant trouvé l'inspiration, j'ai cherché à créer une illustration décrivant non pas spécifiquement les événements de la scène, mais plutôt l'intensité du désespoir et de l'agonie ressentis par le personnage principal à un moment aussi crucial de l'histoire.
